The Great European Rally 2017

Autoworld, Belgium.

Registration takes place in Brussels, which is a short drive from the port of Calais or Dunkirk. We meet at the Autoworld Car Museum in the city centre, which is one of Europe’s largest museums hosting over 250 cars.

Once we’ve completed registration and had a good look around the museum we head off to Europe’s most challenging public race circuit, the Nürburgring in Germany.

Nürburgring, Germany.

After a short drive, we arrive at the Nürburgring just after noon and in time for a spot of lunch. There are some great bars and restaurants to choose from, all within walking distance of the ring.

After grabbing a bite to eat, there will be plenty of time to put in a few good laps before meeting up at the this evening's venue. But if you don’t fancy taking your wheels out on the circuit, you’ll find plenty to do at the ring with its excellent attractions.

You can even ride in a BMW M5 ring taxi driven by a well seasoned race driver.

Stuttgart, Germany.

Leaving late, allowing plenty of time for extra laps at the ring, we take a reasonably short drive to Stuttgart in Germany.

Once in Stuttgart we will have the chance to visit the amazing Porsche and Mercedes Museums before meeting at this evening's venue.

Black Forest, Germany.

We find ourselves driving through the Black Forest on some of the best roads in Germany, including the Schwarzwaldhochstrasse (B500) from Baden-Baden.

The B500 is a fantastic fast flowing road winding through the beautiful Black Forest. It's a perfect drive to build us for what's to come and a great alternative to the rather dull motorway.

Interlaken, Switzerland.

Having driven down through Germany and crossed the border into Switzerland, we arrive in Interlaken.

Interlaken is a fantastic Swiss town located between Lake Thun and Lake Brienz, at the foot of the stunning mountain trio of Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau.

In the morning we'll start our day on some of the best mountain passes in the world, the Grimsel Pass, Furka Pass, Tremola Pass and finally the San Bernardino Pass.

Grimsel Pass, Switzerland.

Grimsel Pass has an overall elevation of 2,165m above sea level, it is located near the source of the Rhone at the Rhone Glacier.

The pass offers a mixture of long sweeping bends as well as tight hairpins, together with breathtaking scenery, it makes one of the top ten mountain passes in the world.

Furka Pass, Switzerland.

Still climbing, the Furka Pass brings us to 2,429m above sea level. Built for strategic military reasons, the pass has a near perfect road surface with wide lanes allowing you to fully enjoy the drive.

It was previously used as a film location for James Bond (played by Sean Connery) driving the iconic Aston Martin DB5 in "Goldfinger".

Tremola Road, Switzerland.

This spectacular road is constructed largely of granite cobblestones, at one point it climbs 300m in just 24 hairpin bends over 2.5 miles.

It is considered to be Switzerland’s longest memorial to road construction, offering impressive mountain views as we lead on to Gotthard Pass.

Gotthard Pass, Switzerland.

We leave the the old cobblestone road and join the more modern Gotthard Pass, which is considered to be Switzerland's most important North-South connection.

Modern construction methods allow for many stretches and even hairpin bends to be elevated well above the ground below offering unique viewpoints along the pass.

Verzasca Dam, Switzerland.

Along our route we come to the Verzasca Dam. This 220m high Dam was featured in the film "Goldeneye" where James Bond (played by Pierce Brosnan) makes history performing the worlds highest stationary bungee jump.

Like Bond, you too could take the plunge! The 220m drop makes for an adrenaline pumping 7.5 second free fall. Even if you don't fancy the drop, it's well worth a visit!

San Bernardino Pass, Switzerland.

As featured on Top Gear, the San Bernardino Pass offers a fantastic drive with it's excellent road surface, relatively flat climb, wide sweeping bends and great hairpins.

Along the pass the surrounding landscape is outstanding with deserted castles, dramatic rock formations and fast flowing streams and waterfalls.

Chur, Switzerland.

We find ourselves arriving in Chur for the afternoon, providing ample time to freshen up before exploring the city.

Although Chur is a relatively small city, it is Switzerland's oldest with over 5,000 years of history and it has plenty to offer! In the evening we meet up at our planned venue in the heart of the city.

In the morning we set off for another fantastic day of mountain passes including the Fluela Pass, Ofen Pass, Umbrail Pass and the famous Stelvio Pass, just over the Italian border.

Fluela Pass, Switzerland.

Leading out of Chur we quickly make our way to the Fluela Pass. With it's perfectly smooth road surface winding through the mountains and wide hairpin bends it makes for an exhilarating drive.

Ofenpass, Switzerland.

This fantastic little pass takes us through the stunning Swiss National Park, a pristine wilderness. There's even a slim chance to see some native bears!

The road surface is good and the pass is quiet with wide stretches and corners allowing for a rewarding drive through this beautiful landscape.

Umbrail Pass, Switzerland.

Our final mountain pass in Switzerland before crossing the Italian border is also Switzerland's highest at 2,501m above sea level.

With a wide curving road surface and 33 hairpin bends the pass makes for an excellent drivers road. Towards the summit, it scales up the Dreisprachenspitze before joining Stelvio Pass.

Dreisprachenspitze translates "the peak of three languages" as the summit is a tripoint between three different regions speaking Italian, German and Romansh.

Stelvio Pass, Italy.

We join one of the most famous mountain passes in the world, Stelvio Pass. At 2,757m above sea level, it is the highest paved road in the Eastern Alps and the second highest in all of Europe.

The Top Gear trio once labelled Stelvio Pass as the "Greatest driving road in the World", and with 48 hairpin bends it doesn't disappoint!

Constructed by the Austrian Empire in 1820s, this fantastic pass proves to be a challenge, even for the likes of Sir Stirling Moss, the legendary racing driver.

Bolzano, Italy.

Finishing our day in the city of Bolzano, we'll find time is on our side allowing us to settle into the city before meeting at this evening's venue.

Bolzano was recently ranked number one for "Best Quality of Life" in Italy. It's a great city with lots to do and with over 130 restaurants and 50 bars you won't be short on food and drink.

With an early start in the morning we head for the Austrian Alps. It's another day of fantastic driving as we take on the Grossglockner High Alpine Road.

The Italian Dolomites, Italy.

On our way to the Grossglockner High Alpine Pass, we take a slight detour through the Italian Dolomites.

These "Pale Mountains" are truly impressive in their own right and the passes that flow between are well worth the detour!

Grossglockner High Alpine Road, Austria.

This fantastic road takes you through the heart of the Hohe Tauern National Park and to the Grossglockner itself, the highest mountain in Austria and the Eastern Alps.

It goes with reason that the Grossglockner High Alpine Road is something of a spectacle with it's fantastic road surface, 36 hairpin bends and unique surroundings.

As you drive through you will also have the chance to see the amazing Pasterze glacier, currently the largest in the Eastern Alps.

Salzburg, Austria.

Our final destination is the home-town of Mozart and Red Bull, Salzburg.

Austria's 4th largest city is renowned for its baroque architecture as one of the best preserved cities north of the Alps.

With the remainder of the weekend at our disposal, we can take the time chill out in the city before making our way home. Although not strictly part of the rally, you're welcome to join a convoy back to Calais taking the most direct route through Austria, Germany and Belgium (toll free!).
